I took my daughter shopping at the mall and noticed leggings on sale. I bought them for my 8-year-old who wants to be cool along with a few other items. I also bought her a pair of jeggings. That’s what folks are calling leggings these days that look like blue jeans, but cling to your legs. When we got home, I asked my daughter to try on her new clothes to see how they fit. As she slipped on the leggings, her dad proceeded to voice his disdain for the 80’s fashion staple going on and on about how they’re NOT pants! I had no intention of letting her wear them without a skirt anyway, but I was surprised by how much leggings bothered him.
I have now started noticing leggings everywhere being worn the same way I wore them in junior high. Leggings with sweaters, short dresses and boots. Some people are even brave enough to wear them with shirts too short to cover their backsides.. something I would never do outside of the house. Wearing leggings that way is what my daughter’s dad is peeved about and has made sure that I know that’s not okay.
There seems to be a lot of debate about this trend that has found its way back into fashion. Should leggings be worn as pants? Does size matter? I’ve noticed images of Kim Kardashian plastered all over the gossip magazines proudly displaying her voluptuous derriere in leggings worn as pants. It definitely takes a certain level of confidence to pull off, but is it tasteful?
I went to two reliable sources for advice on this one.. my producer and my hairdresser. My producer says it’s all about using good common sense to determine what’s appropriate attire. My hairdresser says it’s important to know what YOU can and can NOT wear. Embrace the mirror she says, or ask a girlfriend who won’t lie to you about how you look in leggings.
While doing some research on this topic, I discovered that O Magazine has some great tips on how to wear legging and has even provided pictures of different well put together outfits. It’s Adam Glassman, O Magazine’s creative director to the rescue. It’s a good thing there’s help out there because no one should have to face this leggings dilemma alone.. even if you’re only eight.
Great Post.. Back in my day, which was not that long ago, leggings were worn under mini skirts. I have seen the latest styles worn with long sweaters. Myself being 37 I wouldn't dream of doing that now. Not that its inappropriate across the board but I think there is an age limit on everything. At least it should be. I totally agree with your hairdresser. Somethings are just not made for everybody. I have seen some wear jeggings and thought "what in the world", why?, and what were you thinking when you donned those on? I think we have taken the phrase "if you got it, flaunt it, way too far. So I share the same feelings as your husband. I have a 17 year old daughter and if she asks the answer will be, No Ma'am.
